Even the most experienced driver can lose control of their car when they hit an icy patch on the road. Blowing snow can obscure vision and contribute to car accidents. Sometimes people who don’t know how to drive in wintery conditions crash into other cars. Parking lot fender benders become much more common in wintertime.
As an auto body shop in Taunton, we’ve seen all of these scenarios happen locally. With that in mind, we want to share some tips to help keep you safe in case of a winter time car accident.
Winter Safety Tip #1: Stock Your Car for Survival
Give yourself an extra layer of protection by making sure you have some survival essentials in your car. Having a blanket and flashlight can be a real game changer if for some reason you’re stuck in your car. A few bottles of water, first aid supplies, flares, jumper cables, and other supplies can be kept in the trunk for when you need them.
Winter Safety Tip #2: Keep Your Cell Phone Charged
We all have our phones with us all of the time, but how many times have you discovered you had no battery when you needed it the most? In the winter time, you never know when you’re going to need to make an emergency call. Get in the habit of checking your phone battery before heading out of the house in the wintertime.
Winter Safety Tip #3: After An Accident, Exercise Extreme Caution
If you’ve hit something with your car, or someone has hit you, exercise extreme caution when getting out of your vehicle. Especially during winter weather events, the ground can be slippery and, in the case of multiple vehicle accidents, the risk of being injured by another vehicle is very great. That being said, once you’ve exited your vehicle, move to a safe location and await first responders.
