Filing a claim is pretty easy and it only takes a few minutes on the telephone.
Not much is going to happen until the claim is filed, so it is usually smart to do so promptly.
At the scene of the accident, you would have already collected the important information like the name, address, phone number, driver’s license number, license plate number and insurance information from any other drivers. And don’t forget the names and phone numbers of witnesses.
Now you are ready to call the insurance company or your agent. If you have a top quality agent that provides REAL service, call them. Otherwise call the insurance carrier directly on their 800 number. They will take down the information about what happened, where it happened and how it happened.
Be sure to get the following information from them:
- Claim Number
- Name of the inside adjuster and their direct phone number
- Fax number and / or email address of the inside adjuster
- Confirm whether you have rental coverage on your policy and what the coverage limits are. Typically $30 / day coverage will get you into a comfortable car while yours is being repaired.
