“So I was in the grocery store when it happened,” Kevin said. “Someone smacked the driver’s side door of my car pretty good – I think it was with a shopping cart, even though the store somehow has no video of this event whatsoever – and there was this good sized dent. Not gigantic, but good sized, you know?”
“I didn’t want to spend money on this situation at all,” he explained. “I was just so mad that it happened and that person left without even leaving a note. So the idea of just taking it to the body shop never even crossed my mind. I pulled up how to fix a dented car door on YouTube and bought myself a dent puller.”
“The thing is that the bodywork repair videos make everything seem so easy. I watched five or six of them before I even attempted to work on my own car. Those guys had no problem. Me? I had a problem.”
“Did I get the dent out of the car? Sort of. Did I wind up wrecking the paint job in several places? Absolutely.” Kevin shook his head. “It was at that point I threw in the towel and told Alexa to find me an auto body repair shop near Lakeville.”
“What was funny about this whole situation, in that sort of not funny at all kind of way, is that fixing the damage I did to the paint job trying to take care of the dent cost more than it would have cost just to have the professional body repair guys handle it.”
“Does DIY auto body repair make sense?” Kevin concluded. “Maybe if you already know what you’re doing, have the tools, and don’t mind doing a little touch up paint work if things go wrong. But for me, the next time this happens, I’m not going to try the DIY route. In fact, I’m going to put that dent puller in our next yard sale.”
When it comes to selecting an auto body repair facility, it’s essential to consider the consequences of attempting DIY repairs. As Kevin’s experience vividly illustrates, embarking on fixing car damage without professional assistance can often lead to further complications and potentially higher costs down the road. Kevin’s realization underscores the importance of assessing one’s own expertise and resources before delving into DIY auto body repair. While some individuals with the necessary skills and tools may find success in this approach, it is generally more prudent for most people to opt for professional help when it comes to addressing auto body repairs. By making an informed decision based on your specific situation and needs, you can ensure that your vehicle receives the expert care it deserves.
