As a car collision repair shop, we do have a bit of an interest in how many car accidents happen in our community. We’d guessed at the numbers before doing the research, but what we discovered shocked us. Can you believe that by the beginning of June, more than 41,000 car accidents have happened in Massachusetts? On average, in Boston, there are 12 collisions a day!
What type of motor vehicle accidents are most serious?
Most motor vehicle accidents in Massachusetts involve cars. Trucks are involved in fewer accidents, but these accidents tend to have more serious outcomes. This is because trucks are larger and heavier than many of the other vehicles on the road. Motorcycles are involved in still fewer accidents, but the outcomes, especially for the motorcycle operator and any passengers, tend to be more more serious.

Does Boston have more car accidents than other comparably-sized cities?
Surprisingly, no. Despite Boston’s reputation for terrible traffic, the city didn’t even make the list of the top 15 worst cities to drive in. The top of that list? Memphis, Tennessee. Florida favorites Daytona Beach, Fort Lauderdale, and Ocala round out the top five, followed by other Southern cities.
What month is the most dangerous month to be on Massachusetts roads?
We hate to break it to you, but it’s July. Safety experts claim this is due to a combination of increased traffic for holiday celebrations, young drivers on the street and not in high school, and more tourist traffic. Drunk and impaired driving is also a concerning issue. Additionally, you’re most likely to be in an accident on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday – that’s half of all motor vehicle accidents. 60% of fatalities occur after 3 pm and before 3 am – so if you want to be safe, plan accordingly.
